Principles of Inheritance

Law of Dominance
In a cross between homozygous parents differing in one trait, only one allele (dominant) expresses itself in the F₁ generation; the other (recessive) remains hidden but reappears in F₂.
Incomplete Dominance
Neither allele is completely dominant over the other; the F₁ phenotype is intermediate between the two parents. E.g. red × white snapdragon → pink F₁. F₂ ratio is 1:2:1 (phenotypic = genotypic). Distinguish from codominance: in codominance both alleles are expressed simultaneously (e.g. AB blood group).
Pleiotropy
A single gene that controls or influences multiple phenotypic traits. E.g. phenylketonuria — single gene mutation affects mental development and skin/hair pigmentation.
Linkage
The physical association of genes on the same chromosome such that they tend to be inherited together and do not show independent assortment.
Mutation

Molecular Basis of Inheritance

Semi-conservative Replication
The mode of DNA replication in which each new DNA molecule consists of one original (parental) strand and one newly synthesised complementary strand. Demonstrated by Meselson and Stahl using ¹⁴N and ¹⁵N isotopes.
Transcription
The process of synthesis of RNA from a DNA template. RNA polymerase uses the template (antisense) strand of DNA to synthesise mRNA in the 5′→3′ direction. The coding (sense) strand has the same sequence as the mRNA (except T is replaced by U).
Translation
The process of synthesis of a polypeptide chain from the mRNA template at the ribosome. Each codon (3 nucleotides) on mRNA codes for one amino acid; tRNA carries the amino acid to the ribosome via its anticodon.
Genetic Code
The relationship between the nucleotide sequence of mRNA (codons) and the amino acid sequence of a protein. It is triplet (3 bases = 1 codon), degenerate (multiple codons for one amino acid), universal (same in all organisms), and non-overlapping.
Hardy-Weinberg Principle
Allele and genotype frequencies in a large, randomly mating population remain constant from generation to generation in the absence of evolutionary forces (mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, natural selection, non-random mating). p² + 2pq + q² = 1 where p = frequency of dominant allele, q = frequency of recessive allele.

Natural Selection
The process by which organisms with heritable traits better suited to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more successfully than others, leading to the accumulation of favourable traits in a population over generations. Darwin's mechanism of evolution.
Darwinism vs Lamarckism
Lamarck: organisms acquire characters during their lifetime in response to environment and pass them to offspring (inheritance of acquired characters). Darwin: variation exists in populations; natural selection acts on existing variation; only heritable variations are passed on. CBSE frequently asks to “distinguish Darwinism from Lamarckism” — prepare a 2-column table with 4 points of difference.

Ecosystem
A functional unit of nature where living organisms (biotic components) interact with each other and with the physical environment (abiotic components) and exchange matter and energy.
Ecological Pyramid
A graphical representation of the number, biomass, or energy at successive trophic levels of a food chain. The pyramid of energy is always upright (energy decreases at each level due to the 10% law). Pyramid of biomass can be inverted in aquatic ecosystems (small phytoplankton mass supports larger zooplankton mass). Pyramid of numbers can be inverted (one large tree supports many insects).
Biodiversity
The variety of life on Earth at all its levels — genetic diversity (within a species), species diversity (between species), and ecosystem diversity (variety of habitats and ecological processes). Measured by species richness (number of species in an area).
In-situ Conservation
Conservation of species within their natural habitat. Examples: national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, sacred groves, and the establishment of biodiversity hotspots.
Ex-situ Conservation
Conservation of threatened species outside their natural habitat. Examples: zoological parks, botanical gardens, wildlife safari parks, seed banks, cryopreservation of gametes, and tissue culture collections.
Ecological Succession
The process by which the structure of a community changes progressively over time. Primary succession begins on bare, lifeless substrate (bare rock, sand); secondary succession occurs in areas where existing community has been removed but soil remains.
Greenhouse Effect
The warming of Earth's surface caused by greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, CFCs) that trap infrared radiation re-emitted from Earth's surface, preventing it from escaping into space. Enhanced greenhouse effect due to human activities causes global warming.
Ozone Depletion
The thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer primarily due to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). UV-B radiation released as a result causes skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to marine phytoplankton. Montreal Protocol (1987) was established to phase out CFCs.

Excretion

Ultrafiltration
The first step of urine formation in the glomerulus of the nephron — blood is filtered under high pressure through the glomerular capillaries into the Bowman's capsule to form the glomerular filtrate. All small molecules (water, glucose, urea, ions) pass through; plasma proteins and blood cells are retained.
Selective Reabsorption
The process in the renal tubules (PCT, loop of Henle, DCT) by which essential substances (glucose, amino acids, 70–80% water, Na⁺) are reabsorbed back into the blood from the glomerular filtrate. Active transport is involved for glucose and amino acids.
Tubular Secretion
The active transport of waste substances (H⁺, K⁺, creatinine, ammonia) from the blood into the renal tubule, adding to the filtrate to form final urine. Important for maintaining blood pH.

Circulation

Double Circulation
The system in humans and other mammals where blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit — once through pulmonary circulation (heart → lungs → heart) and once through systemic circulation (heart → body → heart). Ensures oxygenated and deoxygenated blood do not mix.
Cardiac Output
The volume of blood pumped by each ventricle per minute. Cardiac Output = Stroke Volume × Heart Rate. Normal cardiac output ≈ 5 litres/minute (70 mL stroke volume × 72 beats/minute).

Breathing & Immunity

Tidal Volume
The volume of air inspired or expired during a normal breathing cycle — approximately 500 mL in a healthy adult. Distinguished from IRV (inspiratory reserve volume, ~2500 mL) and ERV (expiratory reserve volume, ~1000 mL).
Active Immunity
Immunity developed when the host's own immune system encounters a pathogen (natural) or vaccine (artificial) and produces memory cells for long-lasting protection. Slow onset but long-lasting. Passive immunity: antibodies produced by another organism are introduced (e.g. mother's antibodies to foetus via placenta, antivenom). Rapid onset but short-lasting — no memory cells formed.
